Michigan: Ban Pound Seizure & Class B Dealers

House Bill  HB5263, a bill to ban Pound Seizure, is stuck in committee.  Currently there are shelters in Michigan which still allow pound seizure.  This means that Class B dealers are allowed to go into the shelter and for little, and sometimes no, cost, take the dogs that they want.  They then resell those dogs for research.  This is very profitable to them.

Why should you oppose this practice?  Well, first of all, please understand that these dealers are allowed to pick the dogs they want BEFORE those dogs are offered to the public for adoption and BEFORE rescue groups are allowed to take them.  And they get the dogs at a much lower cost or free while you and I have to pay for their release.  These are dogs who once were family pets.  They trust people which makes them much easier for the researchers to handle.   If YOUR dog is lost or stolen and then dumped, it could easily end up in one of these shelters.  You may never find your dog because it was sold to a research lab for experimentation.  Yes, it is required that they check for microchips and tattoos before doing this.  But it often doesn’t happen.  If your dog turns up missing, should you have to have this additional worry?

Research is, more and more frequently now, done “in vitro” or through computer simulation.  If live animals are required, isn’t it better to use animals who are bred for this specific purpose?  Dogs who haven’t known the life of a much-loved pet and are not going to be nearly so terrified at their new condition?  Animals bred for research make a much better control group.  Why continue to use our PETS for any research?  At least give them a chance at a new home through adoption directly or through rescue.

PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHOR OF THIS BILL, THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE.  Ask that this bill be released from committee and passed.  Protect your pets and mine!

Do I Go Home Today?
by Sandi Thompson

My family brought me home today cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm.

They played with me and laughed with me, they showered me with toys.
I sure do love my family, especially the little boys.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats.
They even let me sleep with them and snuggle in the sheets.

I used to go for walks, often several times a day.
They even fought to hold the leash, I am proud to say.

Theses are things I'll never forget -- a cherished memory.
I now live in a shelter -- without my family.

They used to laugh and praise me when I played with the old shoe.
But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.

The kids would grab a rag, for hours we would tug.
So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bathroom rug.

They said I was out of control and would live outside.
This I did not understand although I tried and tried.

The walks stopped one by one. They said the hadn't the time.
I wish that I could change things. I wish I knew my crime.

My life became lonely, In the back yard, on a chain.
I barked all day long, to keep from going insane.

So they brought me to the shelter but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy, and then kissed me good-by.

If I'd only had some classes, as a little pup.
I wouldn't have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left", I heard the worker say.
Does this mean a second chance?
Do I go home today?
