It’s so hard for us humans to decide when it is time

We always seem to think of you when you were in your prime

It’s hard for us to see that you are getting, oh, so frail

We look over at you and see the wagging of your tail

 

We just don’t understand how much it hurts you to get up

In our minds we tend to see you as you were when just a pup

We need to understand that now it takes all of your strength

Yet we just blindly pretend that your pain is at arm’s length

 

You still try so hard to do whatever we may ask

We simply do not understand how difficult the task

Just to rise and let us know you need to go outside

Because a soiling in the house is too much for your pride

 

The look within your eyes at times will make me look away

I’m sorry for my selfishness and don’t know what to say

So please forgive us for some of the thoughtless thing we do

It’s just that we can’t bear the thought of ever losing you
