Shelter Workers

by Marcie Tepper

So many lives I couldn’t save

They’re just a spinning around my head

How dare I think to forget them

They never deserved to be dead

There are just so many lives

Dumped in the shelters every day

Because of thoughtless people

It is with their life they will pay

They let their dogs get pregnant

Without giving it much thought

If they had a ounce of brain cell

They would see the pain it brought

But they just turn their cheek

As they go on their merry way

Not caring of the outcome

Of the pups they dumped that day

Thank God there are people

Who care enough to try

To find a home for them

Before their time to die

But due to simple numbers

This is just an impossible task

And when they take their lives

It’s God’s forgiveness that they ask

But it’s not them who have done wrong

They didn’t put them on his Earth

It is the thoughtless humans

Who could have easily prevented their birth
