I rescued a dog today, it’s just something I
do
If you’ve never done so, then you haven’t a clue
Someone didn’t want him, they left him to die
He’d done nothing wrong and couldn’t understand why
He was left in shelter, they thought he’d find a home
Thought it was better than dumping and left there to roam
They had no idea that with shelters so small
Though try as they might, they can’t save them all
You are one lucky dog even though you don’t know
You were one step away from being on death row
I’ll get you healthy, a family I’ll find
But all I can think of are the ones left behind
With no one to take them they surely won’t live
They had so much to offer, had so much to give
I pray that each one of them may find some peace
I wish that the numbers in shelters would cease
Until that does happen, I’ll help just a few
Compared to the numbers that shelters run through
Each person who rescues tries as hard as they can
It’s not the dog’s fault, it was created by man
I’m so glad I saved you and you weren’t left
to die
To the others it’s so hard to tell them good-bye
I see their sad faces and know most of their fates
Will be to meet God when they cross Heaven’s gates
