Calves - Cute Little Ones

by Marcie Tepper

Calves

Oh, those cute little calves as they run into the pen
Their jumping and running, I haven’t smiled so since when
They look like they’re having such a grand time out there
They truly look as if they haven’t a care

They make you want to just give them a hug
As if on a leash you could just give them a tug
Their sweet little noses that they wrinkle so cute
I fell in love the minute they ran out that chute

Now look as they run from that great big ole horse
They must be having the time of their lives, oh, of course
Gee, look, he’s now fallen, and he wiggles to get up
His legs just a flailing like some soft cuddly pup

Some nice men come out and then carry him away
I wonder just how much that sweet thing must weigh
It must be a lot, ‘cause they each grab two legs
As he bellows and hollers for his mother, as he begs

Make no mistake my uninformed friends
These animals will come to no glorious ends
He’ll be tossed in a pile like some great rubbish heap
He’ll scream from his pain, ‘til it subsides to a weep

They won’t even bother to rid him of pain
Those couple of dollars would eat into their gain
They’ll just let him suffer ‘til they finish all their fun
If he’s lucky he’ll die quickly with the shot of a gun

And by the way, did you think he was out there by choice?
Do you think that at any point he was given a voice?
He most likely was shocked by some small hidden tools
The type that’s forbidden in most Rodeo rules

Or his tail was twisted in such a tight hold
That he ran from the pain just to make it unfold
Sometimes they are broken, can you imagine the pain?
And all for amusement of the audience to gain

What a shame we exploit of our friends in this way
Oh, what a shameful huge price that they pay
But until it is brought to the attention of men
They’ll just keep doing it again and again.
