Boomer

by Marcie Tepper

This is the kicked puppy after being at my house a couple of months

Boomer

I’m trying to figure out what’s going on in your head

You bite and you growl but I don’t wish you dead

You are but a young one, so I will try to fix

I’m hoping to get fewer bites and more licks

You don’t realize you are a powerful beast

But you can’t find a home ‘til you stop biting at least

Even then it is questionable what they could evoke

If from a strange person threatening words might be spoke

I’ll love you and help make you feel safe and warm

Hopefully kindness can help you conform

Because if you can’t there’s no home for you

I’d keep you myself if I’d only a few

But my home’s getting crowded with dogs cast away

They’re just supposed to visit, they’re not meant to stay

But as I look in the eyes of each one left in my care

Each one brought to a shelter and then just left there

They couldn’t help that they had issues with man

Each one was doing the best that they can

But someone had hurt them early on in their life

They were kicked, they were beaten, had a life filled with strife

Now each of them would protect my life with their own

It’s their way of repaying for not leaving them alone

They look at me knowing I love them so much

They thank me each day for my kind, loving touch

I just wish that there were more people like me

That through all their flaws a companion they’d see

They just need to know they are safe from all harm

Then they’d show you too all their wonderful charm

But for you it is going to be such a task

I’m afraid it will be too much work that I ask

For you have some issues that just are not good

When something looks in my door you attack of the wood

When one of my goats looks at you through the fence

You rip it and pull it, you are so intense

I’m not sure what you’d do if you got through the wire

If someone needed protection, it is you I would hire

But I don’t want your life spent just guarding some sheep

I want you to have a nice home in which to sleep

So I’ll keep trying to teach you that you can be nice

What people have done to you, you’ve paid a big price

You’re goofy, you’re loving, but we’ve got work to do

One minute you’re great and the next I can’t trust you

So be patient with me as I figure you out

To figure what your little mind’s all about
