Zoey - Told Me Today

by Marcie Tepper

This is written for Zoey, who is now near the end of her life.  Choosing the day to end it is one of the most painful things a person has to go through--deciding what is truly best for the animal when all you want to think about is your heartbreak in losing them.  As their caregivers, we owe it to them to not allow them to suffer just to keep them with us longer

Zoey - My Beloved Companion Of Many Years

I know I said to let me know

When it was time for you to go

I’m just not ready, can’t you see?

I need you here right beside me

I know it’s hard for you to walk

I watched you trip, we’ve had that talk

You look at me with pleading eyes

I’ve looked right back so full of lies

I try to tell you you’re all right

Each time I hold you through the night

But you are weak, you’re falling more

I saw your pain down on that floor

I ask you wait just three more days

I need you in so many ways

I want to say good-bye to you

And all your favorite things we’ll do

We’ll take a ride, get an ice cream cone

Go to the store and buy a bone

I’ll carry you if it need be,

I can’t believe you’re leaving me

I love you so with all my heart

You know I did right from the start

You saved my life, you’re inside me

No greater dog there’ll ever be

So please do help me through your death

As I hold you during your last breath

I pray that God will help us through

The release of pain I give to you

I promised you would never feel

Pain at the end, it was a deal

So I will hold you close and pray

For comfort on our one last day

In my heart you’ll always stay

A smile for you I’ll give each day

I’ll remember how you taught me love

Until the day you went Above

You’ll always be that special one

I think of ‘til my days are done

There’ll never be one to replace you

I know that I won’t even try to
