About the "free" dog I took in...
Author Unknown

About 2 years ago the mother-in-law of a friend of mine called to see if I could take in a dog that was going to be sent to a shelter because his family (her co-worker) no longer had time for him and "only wanted him to go to a good home". We were considering a dog for our family and he was the right size - so we said yes. She (the mother-in-law) spent over $100 having him shaved (he was nothing but matted hair which couldn't be brushed) and picked up the right type of grooming tools for him ,brushes, nail trimmer, etc.

She spent a day of her time to drive him over 50 miles one way to drop him off. Once we had him we realized (from his vet records) that he hadn't seen a vet in over 2 years - so we took our "free" dog in to the vet and paid $147.00 to get his vaccinations up to date. He had no training and was a "runner" so we also had him micro-chipped for another $40+ activation. It turned out that this family who loved him so much never did take care of his teeth and he needed a cleaning and 3 removed. Another $235.00. Then we got our "free" dog a leash and collar so we could teach him how to go for a walk with us. We got him a comfy bed & crate for him to call his own. We got him a few toys. I thought it was odd that he lived with his family for three years and didn't have any of these things, and couldn't help but to hope that they didn't save that stuff because they were going to get a new, better dog. Our set up costs were in the ball park of around $500 for our "free" dog. We joked about how it would have been much less expensive for us to get a dog from a shelter or a foster organization as their fees were less than half of what was shelled out for this guy. Turns out that he is the BEST DOG EVER - sorry people, but everyone else's dog is just vying for second place;)

Truly, people should stop making an issue about the rescue fees - IT IS A DARN GOOD DEAL! The fees that they charge are barely squeaking them by. Everyone is a volunteer, everyone who volunteers also is donating transportation, goods and services.  Please be a part of the solution...
